Aladdin

Hudson Scenic Studios artists apply a scenic gold finish to stalactite-shaped portals for the set of a touring production of Disney's Aladdin.

More than 200 tons of scenery move behind Disney's Aladdin on Broadway, coordinated across numerous networked machines and run from a single automation station, many engineered, fabricated, and automated by Hudson Scenic Studios. Four custom high-speed performer lifts, built into a steel sub-deck frame with clear enclosures and dual fail-safe sensors, launch performers like the Genie straight out of the stage floor at 12 feet per second for the musical number, "Friend Like Me." Eighteen hidden floor tracks move giant set pieces within inches of a dancing ensemble, while automated telescoping towers rise, rotate, and track across the deck to assemble Agrabah's marketplace in real time and transform the Cave of Wonders into a living, shifting treasure room.

Hudson's finish team matched that engineering and fabrication with equally ambitious craft: UV-reactive iridescent paint that lets a lighting cross-fade turn a sunlit courtyard into evening without moving a single piece, and a proprietary vacuum-metallized gold finish, hand-detailed with thousands of faux crystals so the cave sparkles under every light cue.
