Hourly Rate: $41.05 - $54.75

The Opportunity

Hudson Scenic Studios seeks a skilled and detail-driven Technical Designer experienced in theatrical scenery, themed entertainment, immersive activations, or complex custom fabrication to support our production team in translating ambitious designs into extraordinary built experiences.

 

As a Technical Designer, you will report to the Director of Production and collaborate closely with an interdepartmental team, our clients, and their designers to translate each project's design concepts into safe, cost-effective, and schedule-compliant fabrication and installation methodologies. You will also create production-ready drawings that reflect those methods and participate in prototyping, commissioning, and quality control to help ensure that each of our projects appears and functions as intended.  

 

Since much of what we build has never been built before, success in this role requires curiosity, tenacity, and enthusiasm for researching and developing creative solutions. We pride ourselves on being hands-on, highly collaborative problem-solvers, so strong communication skills and the ability to work in-person at our Yonkers, NY facilities are essential.

Note: Hudson Scenic Studios is a proud International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (I.A.T.S.E.) Local One affiliated shop and operates under a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).   • Pre-Production Support 

    • Collaborate with Director of Production, department heads, clients, and designers to translate each project’s design intent into budget- and schedule-appropriate fabrication and installation methods.  

    Production-Ready Drawings 

    • Create production-ready drawings for shop use based on designers’ drawings, layouts, and other visual aids; and 

    • Work closely with Project Managers to help develop, track, and complete work within each project’s design budget and schedule.  

    Production & Installation Support

    • Support Director of Production and department heads in prototyping, commissioning, and performing quality control of custom scenery, elements, and equipment to ensure compliance with the design intent; 

    • Draft detailed assembly, installation, and/or as-built drawings and assist Project Managers in compiling Operating and Maintenance (O&M) Manuals; and

    • Research and liaise with vendors to identify and order materials and hardware necessary to build each project as designed.

  • Must-Have

    • Bachelor’s degree (BS, BA, or BFA) in Theatre Design and Technology, Themed Entertainment Design Engineering, or a closely related field; 

    • Minimum 3 years of professional experience in live entertainment, themed attraction, and/or experiential technical design or engineering;  

    • Proficiency in Inventor, AutoCAD 3D, and Bluebeam; 

    • Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Excel, Word, SharePoint, and Teams) for project communication and documentation; 

    • Demonstrable knowledge of stagecraft practices; 

    • Proven ability to communicate and collaborate well with others at all levels of an organization;  

    • Meticulous attention to detail and strong sense of pride in your work; and  

    • Ability to work at our Yonkers, NY facilities between 7:30 am – 3:30 pm, Monday - Friday, with overtime hours as needed.

    Preferred

    • Proficiency in Mastercam, Photoshop, Revit, and/or Rhino. SketchUp and/or Solidworks are also a plus;  

    • Experience designing winches and rigging equipment; and  

    • Prior hands-on experience in one of Hudson’s fabrication trades: scenic carpentry, CNC and manual machining, metal fabrication/ machining/ welding, lighting and electric, and/or automation and motion control (including secondary education, internships, and/or apprenticeships). 

  • This is a full-time non-exempt position with an hourly rate of $41.05 - $54.75 and benefits under the I.A.T.S.E. Local One CBA. Individual rates will be based on experience, knowledge, and skills.
